And the grind is slooow. A full grind from level 1 to somewhere in the castle leves / third boss, can take one to two hours. And the loot may be something like 2030 ore and 67k gold. The ore isn't even enough for a single upgrade and the gold barely covers a single upgrade at the blacksmith.
If you've not found the thief yet, looking for him and unlocking the tavern gives 2 drinks by default, some of them give some nice benefits early on that could help. It's a challenge mode. Grinding for power defeats the purpose. If you want to grind there are infinite ng levels in normal. Now that you say this I think the best option for tweaking merc mode would be a large gold bonus. Something like 3x in ng0, 4x in ng+1, etc. Alternatively, it'd be really fun if they did something like the old hammerwatch ...
If you haven't, you really shouldit's a bit of a grind, but commit to a single character and get them to the power level where you're reliably making huge gains. At the tier I'm playing, a run is successful if I complete the dragon, win with about 300k gold, and also have anywhere from 150500 ore, depending on imp luck.
The point is to try to farm as little as possible in the early game. It might seem tempting, to try to get ahead of the curve by grinding ore in the early game and saving up a little extra to get one more bonus to ease the difficulty, but simply making it one dungeon higher the hard way sees such massive increases in gold and ore loot that grinding early levels is extremely inefficient.

For gold and ore you have in the dungeons mine carts to send it to town for future upgrades, if you don't send gold and ore back to town and die you lose it. Upon death you also will lose all items you found. If you die you spawn back in the town where you can upgrade and buy stuff and try again, for that you need the gold and ore you send to town.

Meaning you can grab a couple more you might not have, that give you more ore or gold, or make you more survivable. But yeah every NG+ of pyramid or moon temple give you rewards. #6. ... So, if you have 0 gold in town, tax is 0%. If you have 5000 gold in town, the tax might be like 40%, more or less depending on your town upgrades. This is just my impression. Keep your money only if you want the church upgrades. I believe it is based on how much money your town currently has.
